Occupational Therapy for children with Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal disorder in children in Australia. It affects families and children in different ways. It can affect a child’s health, attention, learning, social, communication, motor, behaviour and independence skills.

How Can OT Help?

If your child has a diagnosis of Down Syndrome an experienced Kids Play occupational therapist can help them to master the skills they need to play, learn and care for themselves.

At Kids Play we can help with:

  •  Poor attention and concentration playing or in class
  • Floppy posture, trouble sitting upright at the table
  • Daily living skills like toilet training and dressing,
  • Picky eaters and problem feeders
  • Managing frequent meltdowns and tantrums
  • Behaviour concerns at home / kindy / prep / school
  • Difficulty writing, learning to use writing alternatives
  • Developing fine motor skills for dressing, drawing, eating and play
  • Difficulty making friends or playing with other children

The Kids Play Approach

Down Syndrome affects children in different ways and each family’s needs will be unique. A Kids Play OT will assess your child to gain a thorough understanding of their strengths, abilities and difficulties. We then work together with your family to identify achievable goals. We use a range of practices to develop your child’s skills, modify tasks so that your child can achieve them, and develop a coordinated approach with carers and teachers.

We also provide support to apply for funding for specialized equipment to make day to day life easier. We are able to apply through the Better Start Initiative, NDIS, MASS and CAEATI funding.

Help your child reach their potential.
